We are currently recruiting for the following positions:

Editorial Assistant

Seeking an editorial assistant for our magazine of ideas, The American. This is an opportunity to work under the direction of an experienced senior journalist who has published, edited, and written for several influential policy publications. 

 

Responsibilities include supporting the managing editor and the editor-in-chief in all aspects of magazine production, copy editing, working with freelancers, and administrative duties. In addition to ensuring that electronic and print copy meets set grammar, style, and quality standards, the associate editor also works to coordinate articles, manage assigned writers, edit articles, and assist with updating the magazine’s website.

 

This position requires strong writing, copy editing, proofreading, formatting, and graphic skills. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, possess superior communication skills, and have a B.A. or advanced degree in journalism with relevant magazine publishing experience. An entrepreneurial spirit and an interest in public policy is strongly preferred.

Research Assistant: Health Policy

Seeking a full-time research assistant to work with economists and doctors on health policy issues. Research topics include Medicare, Medicaid, health reform, and medical ethics.

 

Responsibilities include health policy data collecting and modeling, compiling a health policy newsletter, editing, writing, conference planning, scheduling, and administrative support. Internship Program Coordinator/Human Resources Assistant

Seeking a full time Internship Program Coordinator/Human Resources Assistant to work with one of Washington’s largest, most-respected internship programs.

 

AEI’s internship program has been consistently named by the Princeton Review, Vault Guide to Internships, and Random House Guide to Internships as one of the top 100 programs in the country.  Responsibilities for the coordinator of this program include recruiting, interviewing, coordinating, managing daily operations, and strategic program development.  This position will also include general Human Resources duties such as employee recruitment, event planning, scheduling, database management, and special projects. 

 

The ideal candidate is well-organized, energetic, creative, and mature.  He/She must possess excellent communication, leadership, and problem solving skills.  The ability to multi-task, effectively interact with employees on all levels, and maintain a high level of confidentiality are also essential.  Bachelor’s degree required; interest in public policy preferred.  One year of full time experience in Washington desired.

Research Assistant: Foreign and Defense Policy - Middle East Studies

Seeking a full-time research assistant to work with several Foreign & Defense Policy Studies scholars.

 

Responsibilities include helping to develop and organize AEI panel discussions, conferences, events, and long-term projects – both in their conception and logistical execution; and conducting research in support of scholars on specific Middle East policy issues focusing on Iraq, Iran, Turkey, counter-terrorism efforts across the Middle East, and American pro-democracy policies in the region. The position also includes some editing and proofreading responsibilities and some administrative support.

 

The ideal candidate must have a knowledge and understanding of U.S.Middle East policy and history and must be ambitious, well-organized, and assertive in taking initiative on specific projects. A graduate degree in international relations, political science, regional studies or a related field is preferred but not required. Arabic/Farsi language skills a strong plus.

Research Assistant: Political Corner

Seeking a full-time research assistant to work with scholars in our Political Corner department.

 

Responsibilities for this position include assisting with the research, writing, and editing for studies, papers, newspaper columns, op-eds, and media appearances for scholars studying American politics.  This position is also responsible for helping plan and execute conferences and events.  Duties also include long-term projects and administrative support.    

 

Desired skills for this position include excellent organizational and writing skills along with a demonstrated interest in American politics.  Knowledge of current events and government institutions is also important.

Conference Assistant

Seeking a full-time, highly motivated, and detailed-oriented conference assistant.

 

AEI hosts over 400 events and private meetings every year. Special events include the AEI World Forum, AEI Annual Dinner (large black-tie event), and monthly Bradley Lectures. This position is responsible for assisting staff and scholars with conference planning and execution.

 

The ideal candidate will have an interest in public policy, be self-motivated, and have strong multitasking abilities. Must have a high degree of discretion. Database skills a plus.

Freelance Copyeditors and Proofreaders
Seeking freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers to assist the AEI Press, publishing arm of the American Enterprise Institute. The AEI Press publishes books and monographs on a wide range of public policy issues, including foreign policy, domestic policy, and economic studies. Strong command of Chicago style is essential. Some knowledge of specific subject areas may also be valuable. Previous professional book editing experience is required. Applicants need not reside in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. This is an excellent opportunity to work on interesting material written by world-class scholars.
